Ericsson's Telephony over IP MSAN solution selected by iiNet, a leading Australian ISP

Date: Wednesday, June 8 2005 - Ericsson's EDA IP MSAN was selected by iiNet Limited, a leading Australian and New Zealand Internet Service Provider (ISP) to provide telephony over IP services to its broadband customers across Australia. This is Ericsson's first customer delivery of EDA IP MSAN in the world.

Telephony over IP is the carrier grade version of Voice over IP (VoIP), without the inconvenience of unreliable audio or requirement of extra household equipment.

"Ericsson's carrier grade Telephony over IP MSAN solution allows us to offer our customers a VoIP service with the same level of voice quality and services as landline phones," explained Greg Bader, CTO with iiNet. "Our broadband customers will have the choice to enjoy a truly converged service of voice and data. They can continue to use their existing handsets - the main difference will be competitively priced service bundles."

EDA IP MSAN is Ericsson's broadband-based IP/Ethernet platform that is capable of supporting telephony (POTS) over IP (H.248 or SIP) and broadband ADSL2+ on a single fully IP multi-service access node.

Peter Linder, Technical Director Wireline for Ericsson globally said: "iiNet's move to offer voice puts them on a level playing field with traditional carriers where fixed telephony is still the largest source of revenues.

Telephony over IP using EDA IP MSAN dramatically simplifies access infrastructure, reduces capital expenditure based on multiple services, and reduces operational expenditure."

Ericsson is the prime driver in IP/Ethernet-based access solutions with more than 60 commercial IP DSL Access Multiplexer contracts, enabling advanced services such as IPTV and broadcasted media.

Ericsson provides TDC with IMS for telephony and IP Centrex Services

Date: Wednesday, June 8 2005 - Ericsson has been selected by TDC to provide Ericsson's IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) solution. The solution will allow TDC to offer its fixed network customers various services including IP telephony and IP Centrex to business users.

Ericsson's IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) gives operators an immediate revenue opportunity when evolving to all-IP operations, through a wide range of new or enriched services, and where service enablers for common functions can be reused for multiple fixed and mobile applications.

The IMS based IP Centrex functionality hosts a complete set of personal and group services, with the addition of multimedia support such as video telephony, conference calling, sharing of documents and web pages (collaboration), presence management, instant messaging, e-mail integration and support for remote workers. This will offer an important enhancement to TDC's portfolio using a broad range of interoperable terminals.

Dan Sörensson, Executive Vice President of TDC Solutions says: "In the years to come, many of our customers will add IP and mobile telephony to their communication needs. Ericsson's IMS solution supports our strategy to offer new convergent and innovative services for our customers, no matter what access network they are using".

Björn Olsson, Ericsson Executive Vice President and head of Systems, Ericsson, agrees with Sörensson about the fact that IMS is the foundation for cost-efficient enhanced communications that will provide additional revenue streams to the operators. "We are proud to be able to share with TDC our vast knowledge from working with IMS both from a standardization and development point of view," he says.

Ericsson acquires NetSpira Networks to further strengthen its mobile data offering

Date: Friday, June 3 2005 - Ericsson today announces that it has acquired NetSpira Networks, S.L., a Spanish software company. The company's technology will be integrated into Ericsson's offering for mobile data allowing operators to provide easily understandable charging for services such as Java downloads, web access and MMS. NetSpira's technology enables content and event-based charging and control with minimal impact on network operators' infrastructure.

NetSpira's Enhanced Control Solution (ECS) is already being used commercially by Eurotel Praha in the Czech Republic, Pannon in Hungary, Virgin Mobile in the US, Vodafone in Spain, MobileOne in Singapore, Telefónica Móviles in Spain and Optimus in Portugal, along with other prominent operators in the Americas and Asia Pacific.

Björn Olsson, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Ericsson's Business Unit Systems, says Ericsson will augment its packet core network, which already has service-aware charging and control capabilities, with NetSpira's technology. Ericsson has already deployed 130 packet core networks globally. "Content and event-based charging in the network is being demanded by an increasing number of our customers as it enables operators to fine-tune their charging and service models to maximize revenues without increasing operational costs," he says.

NetSpira's technology will be integrated into Ericsson's Gateway GPRS Support Node, which has been developed in cooperation with Juniper Networks Inc. The existing ECS product line will be further developed and sold via existing channels as well as forming part of Ericsson's core mobile data offering. Ericsson will continue to support NetSpira's existing customers and partners.

Jose Lopez, NetSpira CEO, says the company is proud and excited to be part of the Ericsson Group. "By combining the global strengths of Ericsson and NetSpira's technology, Ericsson has given a clear indication of its intent to be the leading provider of content-based charging solutions, with more than 25 of NetSpira's customer solutions implemented globally," he says.

Ericsson acquires NetSpira Networks, S.L., from its founders and the Spanish technological venture capital firm Bullnet Capital. NetSpira has operations in Madrid and Barcelona, Spain.

Ericsson supplies Telephony Softswitch Solution to AMX in El Salvador

Date: Wednesday, June 1 2005 - America Movil (AMX), one of the largest telecommunications operators in Latin America, has contracted Ericsson for a total upgrade of its fixed network to the Ericsson Telephony Softswitch solution in El Salvador. This project will allow AMX to evolve its current network to a Next Generation Network (NGN).

This is the second Ericsson Telephony Softswitch contract that Ericsson has won in Central America and Caribbean. Previously, in 2004, Ericsson was selected by AMX to provide the same solution in Guatemala. Actually, Ericsson is the only supplier who has sold Next Generation Networks (NGN) in this region.

According to the contract, Ericsson will upgrade AMX's core network from circuit-switched technology, based on AXE-10 exchanges, to a future proof IP-based Softswitch solution. Ericsson will also provide the related implementation and support services. The commercial launch will be in Q3, 2005.

Ericsson's Telephony Softswitch solution will cover the complete fixed line telephony network including local, transit and international network layers. The overall solution will benefit both AMX networks in El Salvador and Guatemala.

"We are consolidating our position as technological strategic partner with America Movil Central America in the wireline arena. During 2004 we installed the installation of the first Engine node with AMX Guatemala" said Moisés Márquez, America Movil Account Manager, Ericsson Central America & Caribbean. "This is the second step of the strategy planned originally with AMX in Central America. We expect to have more businesses in the near future, taken these projects as a platform."

Ericsson Telephony Softswitch solution gives AMX a secure migration path to evolve their circuit-switched network to a multi-service network. It is capable of carrying large and growing volumes of voice and data traffic and enables integrated traditional fixed telephony with IP-based broadband traffic on a single network.
